Have you ever responded to a friend’s post of their child’s birthday with “It seems like only yesterday…” “Time flies…?”
I frequently have.
When we reflect on time, we see that the minutes of everyday tick fast and the years go by so quickly. People say “Time flies when we are having fun,” but time also flies faster when we are too busy or preoccupied. Time and change go hand-in-hand. As time progresses change occurs.
Change is inevitable, and sometimes it catches us by surprise.
Getting ready for work one day, I looked at my reflection in the mirror. The pleasure with what I saw continued as I did my cleansing routine until I put on my glasses to apply my foundation. With the added visual power, I caught the fine lines and wrinkles that heightened the outlines of my facial features. I knew that time has taken its toll on me. The furrows and ridges that replaced the baby-like smoothness of my skin document it.
Not only is change inevitable, but each of us approaches it differently. We can perceive it as an adventure and go for it with gusto. Or with fear and insecurity and proceed on with difficulty. Wherever you are in this spectrum, there is a constant truth we can hold on to and depend on. God never changes!
Hebrews 13:8 tells us, “Jesus is the same yesterday, today, and forever (ESV).”
He will carry us through times of change. He will be our provider, protector, peace-giver, refuge, and strength. He is faithful and always will be.
